Playing with fire!

I specialise in Raku firing. Gathering fallen leaves from the woodland floor of the Chilterns, I use them as combustible ingredients to create some unique details on my ceramics. Read on to see some of my finished pieces and more about how I use this magical, ancient firing method.

“I love the anticipation and uncertainty that happens with a Raku firing. The word Raku translates to ‘Happiness in the accident’. With so many variables, the way the wind is blowing on that day can affect the outcome. Nature’s elements take over, creating a unique piece that's different every time.”

The process.

This ancient Japanese ceramic firing method dates back to the 16th Century and is one of my favourite ways to finish and glaze ceramics. The magical process combines and unites all four elements of nature:

  • Earth. Used to make the piece. Left until bone dry, a bisque firing in an electric kiln follows.

  • Fire. Once decorated with glaze, the pot is placed in a reduction chamber kiln and quickly heated until glowing cherry red.

  • Air. The pot is removed swiftly from the heat, so exposure to air is restricted. Then buried beneath combustible materials, the piece is licked by flames and finally covered to remove the oxygen.

  • Water. Finally, the pot is plunged into cold water to halt the firing process.

Although the process happens under controlled conditions, Raku creates a unique design every time, putting nature’s stamp on ceramics.

The results can be breathtaking, leaving the finished pot with swirling iridescent colours, flashes of gleaming metallics, unique crackles and smoked black areas where the piece has been left unglazed.

“I love to walk the meandering coastal paths and experience the feast for the senses. The roar of the ocean, salt-scented air and the sting of the air-born sand on the breeze.”

The coast is clear.

I'm always inspired by the sea and fascinated with what lies beneath it. My collection of ocean-inspired ceramics includes large swimming fish platters and my ever-popular Octomugs.

Each mug features a spiralling octopus tentacle handle, a hand-carved design and shell sprigs to add even more nautical nuance. Available in a selected colour palette, each is individual in its design and makes the perfect gift for any occasion.
